The Makings of a
Missionary Diplomat: The Correspondences of Henry Otis Dwight, 1867-1884
By Brandon Johnson, Groningen University
Date & Time: 17 April, 6.00-7.00p.m
Location: ANAMED Library
Brandon Johnson recently defended his master’s
thesis on the history of violence in the late Ottoman Empire and is a PhD candidate in
Middle Eastern Studies at Groningen University.
He published a book in May (2023) with the Isis Press
(Istanbul) of the same name as this project. As the title suggests, it is a
collection of letters and so represents a deep dive into the archives of the
ABCFM including those of the Amerikan Bord Heyeti, kept by ARIT at ANAMED and
digitized by Salt Research. Alongside his experience in the ABCFM metadata as
an intern at Salt Research, he will present
on the value of the missionary sources as repositories of disruptive,
micro-historical insight into the late Ottoman
Empire.
