Urban Encounters: Everyday Experience of
Diversity in the City


The panel will take place on April 26 in the ANAMED auditorium. It will explore the everyday experience of diversity through an ethnographic lens concentrating on the various aspects of urban life such as commerce, dwelling, and use of public spaces whereby different socio-cultural groups come into contact. In addition to uncovering the various patterns of encounter in cross-cultural settings and migrant neighborhoods in Turkey and the Netherlands, the panel will focus on what sorts of insights can be derived from different cases regarding the discussions about livable cities and inclusivity. 

This panel discussion is the opening act of the 2019's series "Meetings on Diversity and the Liveable City" co-organized by the NIT and the Netherlands Consulate-General in Istanbul.

* Şule Can (
University of Waterloo, Anthropology): "Fragile Diversities: Negotiating Refuge, Identity and Labor at the Turkish-Syrian Border" 
* Kristen Biehl (Sabancı University, Gender and Women's Studies Center of Excellence): "A Dwelling Perspective: Studying Migration, Diversity and Urban Space in an Istanbul Neighbourhood" 

Discussant:
* Didem Danış (Galatasaray University, Sociology)
